Women at Work. Crossroads, Rhythms, and Continuitiesis a documentary video installation co-curated by Alexandra Mihali and Jo Ying Peng, a Mexico–Romania co-production that explores the working realities of eleven women from Mexico City and Bucharest through bodily, choreographic, and cinematic lenses. Created by choreographer and researcher Flor Firvida Martin and choreographer and filmmaker Simona Deaconescu, the project proposes a dialogic perspective on women’s experiences in Eastern Europe and Latin America, highlighting the intersections and differences that shape their bodies and modes of labor.
The protagonists include: a twerk dancer and social worker, a sculptor, a professional basketball player, a performance and bondage artist, a healer and doula, a wrestler, a transgender seamstress and cook, a therapist and sex worker, a defender of the rights of people with visual disabilities, a glass factory worker, a pole dancer, and a contemporary dancer. Through their voices and gestures, narratives unfold around working conditions, violence, desires, affections, and resistances—composing a living archive of women’s economies and the choreographies of their labor.
Flor Firvida Martin (Argentina/Mexico) is an artist-researcher, choreographer, and performer. Her work explores the relations between body, territory, and community through choreography, performance, video, and social research methodologies. She has presented in international festivals and institutions including ExTeresa Arte Actual, Danza UNAM, and HEI (UK). Recipient of grants from AFCN, Cantemir Programme, FONCA, CONACYT, and Becar Cultura, she co-directs CUICLi Residencias Colectivas (CDMX) and teaches at the LIMINAL Diploma (UANL). Her recent project Women at Work. Crossroads, Rhythms, and Continuities connects women’s labor and corporeal narratives across Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Simona Deaconescu (Romania) is a choreographer and filmmaker whose transdisciplinary work examines social constructs through a blend of fiction and documentary realism. Founder of Tangaj Collective and former artistic director of the Bucharest International Dance Film Festival, she combines movement, image, and technology to expand the notion of choreography beyond the human body. Awarded by the National Center for Dance Bucharest and twice named Aerowaves Artist, she has presented in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Her recent projects explore critical and speculative perspectives on the body’s role in contemporary society.
